Governor Rell Announces Bond Commission Funds for Georgetown
Hartford, CT -- Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced Dec. 25 that $1.3 million for roadway improvements in the Georgetown Special Taxing District in Redding will be approved when the State Bond Commission meets Jan. 8.
The Georgetown Special Taxing District was established to oversee Georgetown Land Development
Company's proposed redevelopment of the former Gilbert & Bennett wire mill site off Route 107 in Georgetown.
The funding is for an at-grade rail crossing and roadway improvements associated with the mixed-use development of the 51-acre property. On completion, this multi-phase project will include housing, retail, community facilities and a new train platform.
This redevelopment project could result in the creation of up to 1,450 permanent
jobs, Ms. Rell said in a release. "My administration is serious about transit-oriented development, and the Gilbert & Bennett redevelopment site has become a model for the rest of the nation. Reusing and redeveloping these contaminated and often long-abandoned parcels is one of the most responsible things we can do as a
state."
The project will convert a major brownfield site into a mixed use transit-oriented development that will support up to 400 residential units, 300,000 square feet of commercial office and retail activities as well as the new railroad platform and parking.
Last October, Ms. Rell announced $425,000 for remediation and removal of contaminated soil at the site.
Ms. Rell thanked First Selectman Natalie Ketcham for her continued advocacy of this project.
